Or How to make your website look and perform better.

If done correctly your website is one of the best marketing tools for your business or organisation. Your website is an interactive online gallery, storefront or portal that is open 24/7. Here are some basic do's and don'ts that all websites should follow to ensure a great end user experience:

    Mobile Device Friendly

Do: Have a website that is optimised for smart devices such as smart phones and mobile tablets, whether the website is responsive or a seperate standalone mobile version of the same site created for mobile devices only. It is more than likely that over 50% of your visitors are trying to view your site on a mobile device.

Don't: Think that a fixed site framework will be good enough. Having a website which is responsive to the users device which they are using means better usability for that visitor.

    Marketing:Newsletters and Blogs

Do: Engage with your audience by writing a regular newsletter or blog. Add a signup button to your website to grow your audience. Use professional Email campaign software such as Mailchimp (which is free).

Don't: Style or send newsletter campaigns directly from your personal email account. Styling markup displays differently depending on device and email client being used. If it looks good on the email client you currently use, does not gaurantee that it will still look good when it arrives in a different mailbox.

    Social Media

Do: Research and define your social media strategy; what will work best for your business? add your social media links to your website such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google plus. All the sharing of your content or products through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.

Don't: Waste time on social media which are irrelevant to your business.

    SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Do: If necessary depending on your website platform, add an SEO plugin, and manage keywords, keyphrases and descriptions for every page on your website. Any content management system (CMS) that is provided with your website should allow you to edit your Meta Tags.

    Audio and Video

Do: Take advantage of media providers such as YouTube, Vimeo and Soundcloud to store your videos and audio, using YouTube or Vimeo as your video provider and Soundcloud as your audio chanel means you can embed your video and audio easily into your site, and you will have the confidence to know it will work (stream) across multiple devices.

Don't: Automatically play video or sound when a website page loads. Most visitors will find that annoying and the first impression of your business or organisation won't be a great one.

A new visitor to your site will form a first impression within two tenths of landing on your first page, remember the first page they visit may not be your homepage. Within 2.6 seconds users will focus their attention on the area that most influences their first impression.

    FLASH

Don't: Since iOS does not support flash, anything using flash (for page introductions, navigational menus, audio or video) will not work. Best practice is to ditch the flash.
